Koh Tao Coastal Hike: Off the Beaten Path
If you’ve explored Koh Nang Yuan, swooned at the sunset on Sairee Beach, and done all the other must-do activities on Koh Tao, get your feet moving on this coastal hike to find some of the most beautiful and isolated beaches on the island.
This route takes you to a number of beaches that are only accessible through this walking path or by taxi boat. You won’t see many people on this hike, but start first thing to ensure maximum isolation (i.e. maximum skinny dipping opportunities).
Early on this hike, I was joined by my doggie buddy. We walked the whole path together, swimming in the ocean and appreciating the view together. He was the best hiking partner!
Start wandering
1. Start at the Mae Haad Pier
Head south with the sea on your right.
2. Walk through the Sensi Paradise Resort up to Charm Churee Resort
You may feel like your trespassing on these fancy resorts, and maybe you are, but this is the only way to get there. Just act like you belong there.
3. Follow the signs and head to Jansom Bay
15 minutes from the most populated tourist spot on the island is this picturesque bay that feels miles from anyone.
Technically, there is a 200TBH usage fee for Jansom Bay, but no one was there when I got there. Not too formal. Swim out about 100 meters from shore and float on some of the tethered rafts.
4. Keep going towards Sai Nuan Beach
Most people arrive here midday by taxi boat and it can get a bit crowded. Another motivation to get going early to beat the crowds.
5. Head to Sai Nuan 2
Just around the corner is Sai Nuan 2 where you’ll find Banana Rock restaurant. You can grab some food and a joint at this point, if it’s open. A nice spot to chill before heading off to another amazing beach locale.
6. Walk uphill heading inland.
Leave the beach up some wooden stair and up a paved hill following the signs to Sky Bar. This bar with a fantastic view is a great place to hang at night and catch a sunset. But if you start your day early, it’ll likely be closed.
7. Head down towards Tao Thong
Tao Thong is a small beach peninsula only accessible by foot. It’s super peaceful, not a sole in sight.
8. Follow the narrow concrete path to Tao Thong 2
On the way you'll pass some oceanfront bungalows. There is a restaurant there that sells food and delicious smoothies. I laid on one of the beachfront hammock, ordered an omelet and mango smoothie, and ate it on a wooden platform with my feet dangling over the ocean, my doggie walking partner by my side.
9. Continue through the forest
You'll get back to civilization at Pinnacle Resort.
10. Walk 15 minutes uphill to Chalok Bay viewpoint to end your hike
This coastal hike was my favorite part of Koh Tao. I saw the true beauty of this island and felt a world away from the other island tourists. If you only do one thing on Koh Tao, this should be it.

How long did the whole hike take approximately?
admin
I took about half a day, relaxing and swimming at each stop. Nonstop it would take about two hours max.
