Jeju Loveland: Where Eroticism and Art Meet
A Park on a Korean Island Dedicated to All Things Sex
Jeju Loveland: It all started during the 70's when the island was a popular destination for newlyweds, most of which were in arranged marriages. The recently hitched usually had no sexual knowledge or experience, which made for some awkward honeymoon nights. Due to their clientele, some of the honeymoon hotels began offering shows that guided the inexperienced newlyweds on how to enjoy consummating their marriage. Interest grew and more people started coming to Jeju for some sexual learning.
In 2002, in the spirit of continued sexual edification, art students began making sculptures for the park. Opened in 2004, Jeju Loveland is home to a Love Museum, gift shop, art gallery, and over 140 erotic statues spread across the land area of two soccer fields.
Exploring Jeju Loveland
The outside of Loveland gives the vibe of a 60s amusement park that hasn’t been given much attention: faded paint, overgrown plants, peeling stickers on the admissions sign and outdated fonts.
As you walk past the ticket counter, follow the penises painted on the ground and on the signs to make your way around the park.
I was really expecting it to be a joke park, some funny penis statues spread around a park. But I was surprised to actually love some of the art. Some were truly beautiful. But of course, there were also those pieces that are just funny, raunchy, put there just to force the giggle out of us all.
Winding your way through the park, you’ll see statues of naked women, men and some animals, well, expressing their love. Interpretations of Korean sex, African sex, American sex, Greek sex. Threesomes, a shaking replica car that plays sex noises from a speaker beneath, penis benches, and so much more.
Gallery: A Few of My Favorite Loveland Statues
As you enter the Love Museum and Art Gallery, there's a claw machine where you can snatch up some sex toys and memorabilia that looks like they have been in there since South Korea became a country. Making your way around, there are glass display cases with all kinds of dildos, condoms, sex toys and everything else you can think of related to sex.
To the back of the first floor is the store. Lingerie, plastic stress balls, like actual testicle balls, or boobs, whips, handcuffs, playing cards with sex positions, key chains, shot glasses and magnets. Any souvenir you could imagine, useful or not. On the second floor, there are rotating art exhibits. When I was there it was "Imagination": a bunch of mini life-like dioramas of sexy situations, one after another. An apartment complex where each unit has a little something going on. Workplace inappropriateness. Sauna fun.
The park itself is nice. You could easily mistake it for a place to stroll on a first date, take the kids out on a sunny day, sit by the man-made lake in the middle and have a picnic. That is until you come face to face with a centaur doing it with a maiden, or three people in the throws of a sexual encounter, or two little pigs sniffing each other. It’s an interesting mix, especially in Korea, where one perceives that sex is a no-no topic of conversation, not something they’re likely to talk about, let alone build a whole park for. But it’s not the only park in the country dedicated to something of a very sexual nature (stay tuned for my post on Samcheok Penis Park).
Wanna Visit?
Jeju Loveland opens at 9:00 and you must be 18 to enter. But if you come with lil ones in tow, there is an anime themed area where they can chill as the adults roam the park.
The park is located in the north of the island, 10 minute drive south from the airport. Take the bus bound for Chuksanjinheungwon, get off at Dokkabi Road.
